Participants Discuss Philosophy at Kickoff of New Teacher Academy

KUAF: The idea of community varies from person to person. A year-long project at Fayetteville High School concludes with an open house showcasing juniors' and seniors' ideas of community as seen through each of their camera lenses. Ozarks at Large, May 7, 2014. Explores collaboration between ERZ Adopt-A-Classroom participants Suki Highers, Fayetteville High School Sociology teacher, and Dr. Kevin Fitzpatrick, Jones Chair of Community and Family, University of Arkansas. (Begins 45 seconds into the audio.)

KUAF: Students from Elkins High School spent time inside a local Walmart, learning about retail basics.  Ozarks at Large, Dec. 8, 2013. Kelly Stewart, category manager with NUK, interacted with Amanda Coleman's business and marketing students from Elkins High School about product placement. NUK representative Gina Hardin used the shelf display in hair-care products to demonstrate how vendors maximize their profits. Denise Thomas, Director of External Relations at the World Trade Center, went with the students to the soda and potato chip isle as a "marketing laboratory." The project was made possible by  the Education Renewal Zone as part of the Adopt-A-Classroom collaboration between Coleman and Tara Dryer, coordinator of the University of Arkansas Global Campus at Rogers.

A local Wal-Mart in Fayetteville became  classroom for Amanda Coleman's marketing class from Elkins, Arkansas.  Students learned about product placement on store shelves when Tara Dryer, coordinator of the University of Arkansas Global Campus at Rogers, adopted the marketing class, teaching them once a month.  Representatives from NUK were brought in by Dryer to explain product placement in relation to customer buying habits.  (Partnership formed through Adopt-A-Classroom, Education Renewal Zone, U of A, Fayetteville)

Maggie McGriff's Fayetteville High School food and nutrition class experienced an etiquette meal catered by Chartwell's in the Arkansas Union through the Adopt-A-Classroom program sponsored by the U of A's Education Renewal Zone.  A campus tour and visit to the hospitality and restaurant management classrooms were a part of the day.  Dr. Robert Harrington and Michelle Pribbernow, from the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food & Life Sciences  and Dr. Stephanie Lusk, Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Education and Research Rehabilitation, were brought together through the Adopt-A-Classroom collaboration with the high school class.

Headline: UA visit a peek at life on campus

One hundred 7th graders from Elkins Middle School toured the University of Arkansas campus in a day-long visit.  Casey Prock, Elkins MS teacher, and Dr. Ron Warren of the University of Arkansas, provided this experience to create a college-going culture to these students, many of which did not consider college as an option.  The event was hosted by the Education Renewal Zone.

The Education Renewal Zone at U of A Fort Smith will begin implementation of Adopt-A-Classroom in the spring of 2015.  The new program will be modeled after the similar 2-year-old-program designed by Education Renewal Zone Director, Elizabeth Smith, of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
